When Penny entered the Dinner Lounge that evening, a somber mood prevailed. Only Francis, the captain, and the two paramedics who had flown in with Dr. Alfonso were sitting at the table.

Francis rose and greeted Penny with a strained smile. “Good evening, Miss Küfer. You are a brave woman,” he said appreciatively. “Our other guests have preferred to dine in their suites this evening. And my team has been supervising the food and drink deliveries from the kitchen.”

“Can’t blame my fellow guests, I guess,” Penny said, settling into the chair Francis offered her.

He nodded. “It’s good of you to join us. You can rest assured I have personally made sure that the food here at the buffet has not been touched. And I myself have taken over bar duty for tonight, so you can enjoy your dinner with peace of mind. What would you like to drink?”

Penny ordered pineapple juice, and Francis made his way behind the bar like a professional bartender.

The two paramedics were making conversation in Spanish with serious faces and hushed voices. Almost as if they were guests at a funeral function.

Penny turned to Captain Barbican, who was sitting across from her. “How is Mr. Sandorf?” She lowered her voice as well, without intending to. “Have you been able to speak to him yet?”

Barbican put down his cutlery. “He’s out of danger. And on the path to recovery, according to Dr. Alfonso.”

“Thank God.” Penny was silent for a moment, then continued, “I take it he decided against involving local law enforcement?” Otherwise, the Carly would have long since set course for the mainland.

Barbican nodded. “That’s right. He trusts that we will be able to resolve the matter ourselves. In that regard, he’s asking you to come and see him—whenever it is convenient for you.”

“Okay. I’ll check on him right after dinner.”

Penny decided not to let her appetite be spoiled. If she was honest, she was ravenously hungry, because lunch had been spontaneously cancelled in the middle of the turmoil around Sandorf’s heart attack.

She went to the buffet and helped herself generously.

The food tasted excellent, even better than the day before. Had the kitchen team done its very best to counteract the anxious mood on board?
